Dr. NATARAJAN RAMANATHAN studied the Bachelors and Masters in Chemistry at St Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India under the Madras University. After graduation in 1979 he stared his teaching carrier at Campion Higher Secondary School, Tiruchirappalli. While teaching chemistry for Grade 11 and 12 students he pursued M.Phil. andPh.D. in Chemistry from Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. M.Phil. thesis results were presented in the American Chemical Society International Symposium held in Toronto, Canada. Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi awarded travel grant for participation and paper presentation. The Ph.D. thesis was on Synthesis of Cupferron-deriatives as Mineral Collectors for Ore Beneficiation. Major part of the doctoral thesis experimental work was carried out at the Departmental of Chemical Engineering, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada under the supervision of Dr.Inderjit Nirdosh.Even while teaching at Campion School Dr.Natarajan published papers in leading journals. He visited the Departmental of Chemical Engineering, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay on several stints in the capacity of research scholar, research associate and visiting scientist during 1990, 1995, 2000, 2002-2004, 2007-2010 and for a short period of two months in 2016. During his research at Lakehead University he synthesized several new organic compounds that could be used in the beneficiation of uranium, copper-zinc, lead-zinc, copper-nickel and copper-lead- zinc ores of Canada. He has a patent application under review on the flotation of zinc ores using a new type of reagents.
He also served as a scientist in Dr.Subhash Basak’s research group at the Natural Resources Research institute (NRRI), University of Minnesota, Duluth, Minnesota, USA from 2004-2007.At NRRI he was involved in the computational design of new arthropod repellents, a project carried out under the consortium of USDA, Walter Reed Military Medical Center at Washington DC, BASF and University of Minnesota. Dr. Natarajan has reed published several research papers and review articles in peer-reviewed journals and written three book chapters. He has also served in the editorial board of Current Computer-aided Drug Design(CADD) and as reviewer for some American Chemical society (ACS) journals, International Journal of Mineral processing, Indian Journal of Chemistry etc. He has also participated and presented papers in several (more than 50) international conferences all over the World. He had developed new molecular descriptors for organic compounds that could be used in Quantitative Structure- activity/ property Relationship (QSAR/QSPR) modelling.
Before joining V.K.A. Polymers in 2010 Dr.Natarajan worked for a year in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Pala, Kerala as Senior Assistant Professor, leading a mathematical chemistry group. At V.K.A. he is actively involved in developing new vector controlled products namely MAGNet LN, VEERALIN LN. The controlled release polymer fabric for pest control developed at VKA is under review for the award of a patent. At present he is leading the development of a new non-pyrethroid LLIN and this product is expected to address the insecticide resistance developed in mosquitoes more comprehensively than any of the WHOPES recommended LLINs currently available.
